AS A RESULT

BY: JONAS DORLUS

The assassination of the president in July shocked everyone in every social stratum of the country. Despite fierce disagreements, most Haitians would not have wished the president to have died in this way. Assassination is terrifying, tragic, torturing, and humiliating.

HCM and their churches condemn this heinous act which led to the death of the president. The mission of the church is to protect life! No one has the right to destroy or take a life. This right belongs to God and to Him alone. However man, because of the hardness of his heart, has given too much importance to it and has done otherwise. In response to the presidential assassination and subsequent violence, churches have organized prayer and fasting groups. These groups pray for a spiritual awakening in Haiti, from which peace, stability, and justice will come.

In the past, HCM congregations did not entangle themselves in the political life of the country. Haitian Christians in general avoided electoral fights and often forfeited their civic voting duty to avoid conflict. They believed that politics had detrimental consequences on the physical survival of the church.

Today, churches are starting to see things differently. Christians are beginning to understand that they are part of the community. They are gradually engaging in political parties and movements that bring citizens together to influence the political and social future of the country. Haitian Christians are starting to believe that change is possible with honest, competent, and upright men of God in charge. Jeremiah 29:7 says: “Seek the peace and the prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into captivity, and pray to the Lord for it because if it prospers, you too will prosper”

Right now, Haiti is in captivity and it needs freedom and peace. For peace to be released, the country needs to be connected to the source of peace--that is, Jesus Christ. With God, change is possible. But, the church needs to continue to carry out its mission to share the good news, denounce sin, and teach the word of God to save lives.

Proverbs 14:34 says, “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin condemns any people.” Pray with us that dishonest, unjust, and wicked acts be cast out, while works of righteousness remain to have a new Haiti!
